Technology Overview

What Is the Product?

The product is an information-as-a-service (IaaS).  TTS develops SAE J2735 SPAT and MAP compliant messages, with additional signal state predictions up to three changes, and provides those messages via our private cloud solution.  The product name for this IaaS is Personal Signal Assistant®.  TTS customers, in various transportation sectors, utilize the messages for connected vehicle applications for driver information, powertrain efficiency, automated driving, and/or safety applications.

How Does It Work?

Our expertise is in prediction and information delivery.  The Personal Signal Assistant® solution is entirely software based and utilizes existing infrastructure communications to the traffic signal from an ATMS.

We partner with existing signal control or ATMS vendors to deliver data in a secure and responsible manner.  Our partner network utilizes existing CV interfaces or our API to develop the connection and transfer data about the traffic signal operations.

Once we receive the real-time traffic signal status data, we feed that source along with other historical information into our machine-learning prediction engine.  In other words, we use several data sources to simulate the most likely outcome for the traffic signal operations for the next one or two cycle lengths.

The following figure shows how data flows from the traffic signals to the vehicle:

We do not utilize Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) or C-V2X (5G) to connect to the vehicle.  In fact, we do not provide a connection into the vehicle; it is our customer's responsibility to make a connected vehicle.

Working with Agencies

TTS works with agencies to execute a data-sharing partnership and advance a vehicle-to-infrastructure deployment.  TTS is working with agencies throughout North America and currently has live service in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ontario, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, DC.   The next states/provinces added will be Indiana, Illinois, Manitoba, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Tennessee.

In exchange for granting access to the data, the agency receives information about the system operation and experienced connected vehicle operations.

Working with Partners

TTS works directly with our Partner network to establish a secure connection between vendor ATMS systems and the TTS servers, or we utilize open data portals that provide the necessary information for our system.

Audi's Connected Vehicle Applications

Audi has been working on V2I technology for well over a decade.

At CES 2014, TTS and Audi demonstrated a proof of concept of how the system could work.  Almost three years later, in December 2016, we launched the Personal Signal Assistant® service for commercial applications concurrent with the launch of Audi connect® Traffic Light Information.

Audi has provided the first commercial V2I service with the launch of the Traffic Light Information feature available with Audi connect® Prime.  The service is now supported in all 2019 models.  More information on their system is available from Audi's latest Press Release.

This is the first step towards a fully automated and piloted future, as shown here:

State of Signals - North America

Over the last three years, TTS has been building an inventory of signalized intersections throughout North America.  By the numbers:
Signalized Intersections
Networked Intersections
Government Agencies
These numbers are not final, but they give a good indication of the state of the traffic control infrastructure in North America.  Our estimate is that there are well over 450,000 signalized intersections in the USA and Canada.
TTS has been active with several agencies to bring our V2X solutions to their communities.  Here is the current status of TTS' ongoing deployment in North America:
